Black History Month Art Exhibition, (Daily: 1st to 31st Oct)

This year’s theme for Black History Month, ‘Time For Change: Action Not Words‘, is the basis for the current visual art exhibition at The Other Place.

One room presents posters that outline, for instance, the history of Civil Rights movement and the contribution of black people within the NHS and in other spheres of British society and culture. These examples of activism are then brought up to date and made locally relevant in an adjoining room which offers a powerful reminder of the anger and solidarity that arose in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd by police officers. (Whilst that case occurred in the USA, black people are also dying in police custody in the UK.) Weston Black Lives Matter and their allies organised local demonstrations of peaceful  protest and many individuals and organisations responded positively, in Weston, the UK and across the world, by showing their solidarity.

Two years on, with the theme of ‘Time For Change: Action Not Words’ this exhibition asks us all to reflect on what we can do to take action and address that challenge.

The event is finished.
