BHM & Exhibition Launch: Saluting Our Sisters

Each year, in the UK, an official national theme is chosen for Black History Month. Consequently, each year in North Somerset a special exhibition reflecting the official national theme (and other events) is organised by Black History Month North Somerset for the benefit of the local community.

Black people have always been at the forefront of social justice movements, fighting against oppression and paving the way for change. However, despite their countless contributions to society, the achievements of black women, in particular, have too often been overlooked or forgotten. That is why, in celebration of the exceptional achievements of black women, the official national theme for Black History Month 2023 is ‘Saluting Our Sisters‘.

The official collection of images of over fifty individually selected women forms the basis of this year’s Black History Month North Somerset exhibition and can be seen in their entirety at The Other Place.

Saluting Our Sisters’ highlights the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities. This year’s celebration will showcase pioneering black women who have made remarkable contributions to literature, music, fashion, sport, business, politics, academia, social and health care, and more.

Enjoy and discover more about these examples of the many Black women who have contributed so much to society in Britain and across the world.
